Why we do things we don't want to do, get results we don't desire?

I often wonder why we do things we don't want to do, get results we don't desire, but still keep doing the same actions repeatedly.

We attended a powerful goal-setting session by Dr. Sajeev Nair on the 1st of January. Dr. Nair is a Human Longevity and Peak Performance coach.

It was quite an engaging session that provided insights into goal setting. He also shared some productivity hacks and introduced us to simple, but a very powerful concept. 

The Brian Familiarity Zone.

He states that our brains cannot differentiate between helpful and harmful actions. It keeps repeating what it is familiar with or trained to do over time.

Now I realize why we keep doing things we don't want to or avoid some tasks/activities we must do.

If our brain is unfamiliar or unacclimatized with the activity or processes we desire to perform, it avoids them. It keeps going back to the default actions it is familiar with. Even if such actions are uncomfortable or undesired, the brain keeps repeating familiar actions.

But then he also assured us that our brain is a programmable device. We can program our brains by Mastering minor achievements.

Anything you repeat, good or bad, the brain masters it over time.

Master Minor Achievements

He advised starting small to avoid resistance and repeating the actions until the brain masters them.

We can train our brains by mastering minor achievements and creating a new familiarity zone. Over time we can train our brains to do much more complex tasks, leading to outstanding results. 

So the key here is repetition.
